Amma is a modern day saint, she is one of the foremost spiritual and humanitarian leaders of our time. Known as the hugging nun from India, she travels the world bringing healing and blessings where she goes.
Amma started her life journey with humble beginnings, at age nine she was withdrawn from school to take care of her seven younger siblings, her mother fell ill and needed help taking care of the household. Part of her daily chores was to gathered food scraps from neighbors to feed their cows, it was at this point that she realized the intense poverty of her community. With a generous heart and spirit the young Amma gave of what she could, even though she did not have much to give.
As a child Amma spent many hours in devotion on the seashore during which time she composed and sang songs of great depth and wisdom. In her daily meditations she realized her calling and forged a path to share her truth with the world, “If it is one man’s karma to suffer, isn’t it our dharma (duty) to help ease his suffering and pain?” (Amma.org)
Amma lives a life of service with the simple conviction that each of us has a responsibility to lend a hand to those less fortunate. To this day she has traveled the world embracing and comforting over 34 million people, spreading the message of selfless service and compassion. She has 4 simple teachings that she encourages people to live by; Love, Serve, Conserve, Practice. She asks no one for conversion but encourages all to commune with the divine through whatever practice or religion they choose.
Her love is limitless and free, so if you’re in need of a hug or some spiritual guidance it would be well worth the journey to attend one of her gatherings.
If she’s in a city near you we encourage you to go for a hug and get inspired into sharing the same love with your fellow humans, it’s contageous. Amma says that love expressed is compassion, and compassion means accepting the needs and sorrows of others as one’s own.
What to expect at an event: devotional singing, talks, prayers for world peace, meditation, and ‘darshan’ – her signature hugs.
Below is an exert from the Embracing The World Organization on their charitable activities:
Embracing the World, Amma’s network of charity organizations, provides food, housing, education, and medical services for the poor. Her global network exists in 40 countries around the world, and has built and/or supported schools, orphanages, housing, and hospitals throughout India. In the United States, the organization has provided soup kitchens and hot showers for the homeless, books and hospital visits for prison inmates, and support for victims of domestic violence. The organization also raised $1 million in aid for Hurricane Katrina victims. The hospital located on the territory of Amma’s ashram in Kerala offers medical care on a sliding scale, allowing people to pay what they can afford. This is often a minimal percent of the total medical cost.
